"God loves the sinner but hates the sin" cliche is so overly misquoted and completely misinterpreted, that it sends out an unbiblical message amongst us.
According to the Word of God in 2 Peter 3:9, God does not wish anyone to perish but all repent! That is God's desire! Tragically, it is not all man's desire to accept Christ, therefore, it is impossible for all people to be saved. Also, evil serves its purpose in God's perfect plan for mankind, therefor many will perish.
We must be clear on this subject for it misleads many to believe God is only this loving, accepting and easy going God, which He is not! God is holy and just! He demands holiness, respect, repentance and obedience! God is love, but loves His own!
Romans 3:23 confirms that we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God. However, there are two types of sinners: repented and unrepented.
The repented sinner, is a born again christian, a child of God (Ephesians 1:5, Romans 8:15-16), that has a radical change of heart and lifestyle from the old life (Romans 6:6-7,2 Corinthians 5:17). Daily, he strives to live godly (1 Timothy 4:7,6:11) in obedience to God's will (1 Peter 1:14-15, Revelation 14:12, Luke 11:28). He fights firmly against temptation and sin (Luke 22:40, James 4:7, Ephesians 6:10-18) and when unwillingly stumbles, [as no-one is perfect], he repents (1 John 1:9, Proverbs 24:16).
God loves this sinner because he repents! God loves His children, but hates their mistakes! The repented sinner confesses his sins, offers sincere apologies to God, seeks correction and strength to not repeat the same mistake. In return, he receives forgiveness through grace! God disciplines His children accordingly, as any father disciplines his children, to draw them away from making the same mistake again! This is Fatherly and godly love that is offered only to His children!
The unrepented sinner is the child of the devil (1 John 1:10, John 8:44) for he rejects God and desires to do the will of the devil. His heart makes wicked plans and his feet run to evil (Proverbs 6:18). He refuses to repent from his sins and stand in the truth. He disregards God and His will, and despises His Word. He calls evil good, and good evil, but considers himself wise in their own eyes (Isaiah 5:20).
This unrepented sinner lives in sin because he choses to. He is not interested in God's will but his own. He refuses to cease living his filthy and ungodly lifestyle. He refuses Jesus Christ in his life and refuses repentance! This sinner approves alcohol, smoking, gambling, lying, stealing, adultering, swearing, gossiping and all the rest. He does not care that it is a sin and against God's Word. He part takes in them as a choice! He is more passionate about fulfilling his carnal desires and fantasies than fulfilling the will of God. The hard truth is that God abhores such people.
There is a significant difference in how God deals with each. Psalm 5:4-6 confirms that God does not take pleasure in wickedness, nor does evil dwell with Him. In other words, God hates sin and nothing evil exists in God! It is impossible to put these two words, GOD and SIN, in the same sentence! Fools cannot stand in His sight! Furthermore, God hates all workers of iniquity! You all hear that? God hates the "worker", the man that commits sin! God will destroy those who speak falsehood, for the Lord abhores the bloodthirsty and deceitful man! That is very harsh language, but reality is that God looks upon the unrepented with disgust and hatred.
If we go bit further in Psalm 34:16, God warns all people, that He is against those who do evil, consequently, cutting their remembrance from the earth! Anyone that stands against God's Word and His will, God considers as evil and will be destroyed! Whereas, anyone that repents, obeys the Word of God, does the will of God and faithfully carries his cross until the end, will receive salvation (1 Peter: 1:9)
Do not be fooled!"God loves the sinner but hates the sin" is a lie straight from the pits of hell! God has standards and unless they are met, hell has a special place for many unrepented souls. God knows your heart and what intentions you have! Therefore, repent, and with a humble heart, seek the Lord so that you may receive grace, mercy, forgiveness and salvation. Amen!
