The Beginning of the Second Missionary Journey, Leadership, Resistance, and Victory (Acts 16:1-40)

INTRODUCERE – INTRODUCTION:
În textul de astăzi apostolul Pavel împreună cu Sila pornesc în a doua călătorie misionară, străbătând cetățile Siria și Cilicia ajung la Listra unde îl iau cu ei pe Timotei, un colaborator al lui Pavel pe care Dumnezeu l-a folosit în mod deosebit, după care Duhul Sfânt intervine și canalizează lucrarea de misiune spre Macedonia, având în plan pătrunderea Evangheliei în Europa, la Filipi are loc convertirea Lidiei și în ciuda prigoanei pornite datorită eliberării unei ghicitoare de duhul de ghicire, este convertit și un temnicier împreună cu casa lui la Domnul, iar după ce Pavel face apel la cetățenia romană ei sunt lăsați liberi și-și continuă lucrarea.
In today’s text, the apostle Paul and Silas set out on their second missionary journey, crossing the cities of Syria and Cilicia to reach Lystra, where they take with them Timothy, a collaborator of Paul whom God especially used, after whom the Holy Spirit intervenes and channels the mission work to Macedonia, with the plan of the gospel entering Europe, the conversion of Lydia takes place in Philippi and despite the persecution started due to the release of a riddle by the divination spirit, a prisoner and his house are converted to the Lord, and after Paul appeals to Roman citizenship, they are set free and continue their work


PREZENTAREA ŞI INTERPRETARE LECȚIEI – LESSON PRESENTATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. Pavel și Sila întăresc Bisericile și în Listra, Pavel hotărăște să-l ia cu el în lucrare pe Timotei, un viitor lucrător și colaborator, pentru că în jur era un mediu iudaic îl taie împrejur
Fapte 16:1. În urmă, Pavel s-a dus la Derbe şi la Listra. Şi iată că acolo era un ucenic, numit Timotei, fiul unei iudeice credincioase şi al unui tată grec. 2. Fraţii din Listra şi Iconia îl vorbeau de bine. 3. Pavel a vrut să-l ia cu el; şi, după ce l-a luat, l-a tăiat împrejur, din pricina iudeilor care erau în acele locuri; căci toţi ştiau că tatăl lui era grec. 4. Pe când trecea prin cetăţi, învăţa pe fraţi să păzească hotărârile apostolilor şi prezbiterilor din Ierusalim. 5. Bisericile se întăreau în credinţă şi sporeau la număr din zi în zi.
1. Paul and Silas strengthen the Churches and in Lystra, Paul decides to take Timothy, a future worker and collaborator, with him to work, because he was surrounded by a Jewish environment
Acts 16:1 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. 2 He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek. 4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Lucrarea la care Dumnezeu ne-a chemat continuă indiferent de circumstanțe, conflicte, prigoană etc, angrenând oameni de nădejde în lucrare precum Timotei
– Timotei era apreciat de frații săi din Iconia și Listra (vezi vers 2)
– Timotei a fost martor la suferințele lui Pavel (vezi 2 Tim 3:11)
– Timotei a fost pus deoparte Pentru lucrare (vezi 1 Timotei 1:18,4:14)
– Timotei avea un dar special certificate prin puneraea mâinilor ( vezi 1 Tim 4:14,2 Tim 1:6)
– Timotei apare precizat în lucrarea din Tesalonic, Corint, Efes, în călătoria către Ierusalim cu ajutoarele strânse ( vezi Fapte 20:4-5)
– Timotei, în Epistolele către Timotei este prezentat având calități spirituale deosebite: afectuos (vezi 2 Tim 1:4), este avertizat să nu cedeze la poftele tinereții (vezi 2 Tim 2:22), să nu-I fie rușine de Evanghelie (2 Tim 1:8), loial (1 Cor 16:10, Fil 2:19,2 Tim 3:10) etc.
The work to which God has called us continues regardless of circumstances, conflicts, persecution, etc. , engaging hopeful people in the work like Timothy

– Timothy was appreciated by his brothers in Iconia and Lystra (see verse 2)

– Timothy witnessed Paul’s suffering (see 2 Tim 3:11)

– Timothy was set aside for the work (see 1 Timothy 1:18,4:14)

– Timothy had a special gift certified by the laying on of hands (see 1 Tim 4:14,2 Tim 1:6)

– Timothy is mentioned in the work of Thessalonica, Corinth, Ephesus, on the journey to Jerusalem with close help (see Acts 20:4-5).

– Timothy, in the Epistles to Timothy, is presented with special spiritual qualities: affectionate (see 2 Tim. 1:4), he is warned not to give in to the lusts of youth (see 2 Tim. 2:22), not to be ashamed of the gospel. 2 Tim 1:8), loyal (1 Cor 16:10, Phil 2:19,2 Tim 3:10) etc.
Lucrarea de misiune și evanghelizare este făcută de apostolul Pavel ținând cont de auditoriu iudaic în care predica Evanghelia de aceea Timotei este tăiat împrejur, fără un motiv religios, doar ca o posibilitate de-a avea acces în mijlocul comunității evreiești.
The missionary and evangelistic work is done by the apostle Paul taking into account the Jewish audience in which he preached the gospel so Timothy is circumcised, for no religious reason, only as an opportunity to gain access to the Jewish community.

2. Pavel avea un plan cu privire la călătorie și lucrarea misionară, însă se supune în totul călăuzirii Duhului și vedeniei prin care Dumnezeu îi vorbește
Fapte 16:6. Fiindcă au fost opriţi de Duhul Sfânt să vestească Cuvântul în Asia, au trecut prin ţinutul Frigiei şi Galatiei. 7. Ajunşi lângă Misia, se pregăteau să intre în Bitinia; dar Duhul lui Isus nu le-a dat voie. 8. Au trecut atunci prin Misia şi s-au coborât la Troa. 9. Noaptea, Pavel a avut o vedenie: un om din Macedonia stătea în picioare şi i-a făcut următoarea rugăminte: „Treci în Macedonia şi ajută-ne!” 10. După vedenia aceasta a lui Pavel, am căutat îndată să ne ducem în Macedonia, căci înţelegeam că Domnul ne cheamă să le vestim Evanghelia. 11. După ce am pornit din Troa, am mers cu corabia drept la Samotracia, şi a doua zi ne-am oprit la Neapolis. 12. De acolo ne-am dus la Filipi, care este cea dintâi cetate dintr-un ţinut al Macedoniei şi o colonie romană. În cetatea aceasta am stat câteva zile.
2. Paul had a plan for the journey and missionary work, but he fully submits to the guidance of the Spirit and the vision by which God speaks to him.
Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in [a]Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the [b]Spirit did not permit them. 8 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. 11 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, which is the [c]foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.
Întotdeauna este bine să avem o strategie sănătoasă, biblică în lucrare, însă să fim permanent supuși călăuzirii Duhului Sfânt cu privire la schimbări și la alinierea la Planul lui Dumnezeu privitor la lucrare.
It is always good to have a sound, biblical strategy in the ministry, but to be constantly subject to the Holy Spirit’s guidance regarding changes and alignment with God’s plan for the ministry.

3. Dumnezeu își duce Planul la îndeplinire prin convertirea Lidiei, în Filipi, lucrarea întâmpinând greutăți printr-o ghicitoare pe care Pavel o eliberează de duhul rău, aceste greutăți Dumnezeu le face să lucreze spre binele Evangheliei
Fapte 16:13. În ziua Sabatului am ieşit afară pe poarta cetăţii, lângă un râu, unde credeam că se află un loc de rugăciune. Am şezut jos şi am vorbit femeilor care erau adunate laolaltă. 14. Una din ele, numită Lidia, vânzătoare de purpură, din cetatea Tiatira, era o femeie temătoare de Dumnezeu şi asculta. Domnul i-a deschis inima, ca să ia aminte la cele ce spunea Pavel. 15. După ce a fost botezată, ea şi casa ei, ne-a rugat şi ne-a zis: „Dacă mă socotiţi credincioasă Domnului, intraţi şi rămâneţi în casa mea.” Şi ne-a silit să intrăm. 16. Pe când ne duceam la locul de rugăciune, ne-a ieşit înainte o roabă care avea un duh de ghicire. Prin ghicire, ea aducea mult câştig stăpânilor ei. 17. Roaba aceasta s-a luat după Pavel şi după noi şi striga: „Oamenii aceştia sunt robii Dumnezeului celui Preaînalt şi ei vă vestesc calea mântuirii.” 18. Aşa a făcut ea timp de mai multe zile. Pavel, necăjit, s-a întors şi a zis duhului: „În Numele lui Isus Hristos îţi poruncesc să ieşi din ea.” Şi a ieşit chiar în ceasul acela. 19. Când au văzut stăpânii roabei că s-a dus nădejdea câştigului lor, au pus mâna pe Pavel şi pe Sila şi i-au târât în piaţă înaintea fruntaşilor. 20. I-au dat pe mâna dregătorilor şi au zis: „Oamenii aceştia ne tulbură cetatea; sunt nişte iudei, 21. care vestesc nişte obiceiuri pe care noi, romanii, nu trebuie nici să le primim, nici să le urmăm.” 22. Norodul s-a ridicat şi el împotriva lor, şi dregătorii au pus să le smulgă hainele de pe ei şi au poruncit să-i bată cu nuiele. 23. După ce le-au dat multe lovituri, i-au aruncat în temniţă şi au dat în grijă temnicerului să-i păzească bine. 24. Temnicerul, ca unul care primise o astfel de poruncă, i-a aruncat în temniţa dinăuntru şi le-a băgat picioarele în butuci.
3. God Fulfilles His Plan by Converting Lydia to Philippi, the work encounters difficulties through a psychic that Paul frees from the evil spirit, these difficulties God makes them work for the good of the gospel
Acts 16:13 And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. 14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. 15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us. 16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly [a]annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities. 20 And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, “These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; 21 and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.” 22 Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. 23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. 24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Odată cu călăuzirea lui Pavel urmează rezultate și Evanghelia ajunge în Europa, este convertită Lidia și deși duhurile rele se manifestă, Dumnezeu este cu Pavel, lucrează eliberare și prigoana iscată este îndreptată spre binele lucrării și lucrătorilor.
With Paul’s guidance, results follow and the gospel reaches Europe, Lydia is converted, and although the evil spirits manifest, God is with Paul, works liberation, and the persecution is directed toward the good of the work and the workers.

4. Prigoana și încarcerarea lui Pavel și Sila duce la convertirea temnicierului și a casei lui și la continuarea lucrării prin intervenția miraculoasă a lui Dumnezeu și apelarea la cetățenia romană pe care o invocă Pavel
Fapte 16:25. Pe la miezul nopţii, Pavel şi Sila se rugau şi cântau cântări de laudă lui Dumnezeu; iar cei închişi îi ascultau. 26. Deodată, s-a făcut un mare cutremur de pământ, aşa că s-au clătinat temeliile temniţei. Îndată, s-au deschis toate uşile şi s-au dezlegat legăturile fiecăruia. 27. Temnicerul s-a deşteptat; şi, când a văzut uşile temniţei deschise, a scos sabia şi era să se omoare, căci credea că cei închişi au fugit. 28. Dar Pavel a strigat cu glas tare: „Să nu-ţi faci niciun rău, căci toţi suntem aici.” 29. Atunci temnicerul a cerut o lumină, a sărit înăuntru şi, tremurând de frică, s-a aruncat la picioarele lui Pavel şi ale lui Sila; 30. i-a scos afară şi le-a zis: „Domnilor, ce trebuie să fac ca să fiu mântuit?” 31. Pavel şi Sila i-au răspuns: „Crede în Domnul Isus, şi vei fi mântuit tu şi casa ta.” 32. Şi i-au vestit Cuvântul Domnului, atât lui cât şi tuturor celor din casa lui. 33. Temnicerul i-a luat cu el, chiar în ceasul acela din noapte, le-a spălat rănile şi a fost botezat îndată, el şi toţi ai lui. 34. După ce i-a dus în casă, le-a pus masa şi s-a bucurat cu toată casa lui că a crezut în Dumnezeu. 35. Când s-a făcut ziuă, dregătorii au trimis pe cei ce purtau nuielele, să spună temnicerului: „Dă drumul oamenilor acelora.” 36. Şi temnicerul a spus lui Pavel aceste cuvinte: „Dregătorii au trimis să vi se dea drumul; acum, dar, ieşiţi afară şi duceţi-vă în pace.” 37. Dar Pavel le-a zis: „După ce ne-au bătut cu nuiele în faţa tuturor, fără să fim judecaţi, pe noi, care suntem romani, ne-au aruncat în temniţă, şi acum ne scot afară pe ascuns! Nu merge aşa! Să vină ei singuri să ne scoată afară!” 38. Cei ce purtau nuielele au spus aceste cuvinte dregătorilor. Aceştia s-au temut, când au auzit că sunt romani. 39. Dregătorii au venit să-i potolească, i-au scos afară din temniţă şi i-au rugat să părăsească cetatea. 40. Ei au ieşit din temniţă şi au intrat în casa Lidiei; şi, după ce au văzut şi mângâiat pe fraţi, au plecat.
4. The persecution and imprisonment of Paul and Silas leads to the conversion of the jailer and his house and to the continuation of the work through the miraculous intervention of God and the appeal to the Roman citizenship that Paul invokes
Acts 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28 But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.” 29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household. 35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the [a]officers, saying, “Let those men go.” 36 So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.” 37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.” 38 And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. 39 Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
În lucrare trebuie să ne lăsăm călăuziți în totul de Dumnezeu, chiar prigoana lucrează spre binele lucrării și noi ca lucrători trebuie să facem apel la orice drept legal care-l avem înaintea autorităților pentru înaintarea Evangheliei șI Dumnezeu poate lucra cu semen și minuni.
In the work we must allow ourselves to be guided entirely by God, even persecution works for the good of the work, and we as workers must appeal to every legal right we have before the authorities for the advancement of the gospel, and God can work with fellowship and miracles.

APLICAREA LECȚIEI – LESSON APPLICATION:
Învățăm astăzi din începutul acestei călătorii misionare cât de important este să ne lăsăm călăuzițI de Duhul Sfânt, să ne facem strategii și planuri de lucru bazate pe Scriptură, însă să ne lăsăm călăuziți de Duhul Sfânt în aplicare, să fim oameni integrii șI de nădejde ca Timotei, iar în prigoană să ne lăsăm sub autoritatea lui Dumnezeu știind că Dumnezeu face ca totul să lucreze spre bine, rezultatul este extinderea Împărăției, însoțirea lucrării cu semen și minuni, convertirea oamenilor și continuarea lucrării cu succes, apelând chiar la dreptul legal de cetățean sau la punți de legătură din domeniul religios.
We learn today from the beginning of this missionary journey how important it is to be guided by the Holy Spirit, to make strategies and work plans based on Scripture, but to be guided by the Holy Spirit in action, to be honest and trustworthy people likeTimothy, and in persecution to let ourselves be under the authority of God knowing that God makes everything work for good. The result is the expansion of the Kingdom, accompanying the work with fellowship and miracles, converting people and continuing the work successfully, even appealing to the legal right of citizens or to religious bridges.

De ce Pavel a hotărât tăierea împrejur a lui Timotei deșI hotărârea din Ierusalim era opusul acestei practice?
Ce învăț de la intervenția lui Dumnezeu prin Duhul Sfânt șI prin vedenie în lucrraea lui Pavel și Sila?
Sunt gata să-mi dau viața mea în Mâna lui Dumnezeu ca să mă folosească chiar în prigoană, așa ca Pavel și Sila?

Why did Paul decide to circumvent Timothy, even though the judgment in Jerusalem was the opposite of this practice?

What do I learn from God’s intervention by the Holy Spirit and by vision in the work of Paul and Silas?

Am I ready to lay down my life in the Hand of God to use myself in persecution, just like Paul and Silas?

Am I looking for opportunities to predict the gospel under any circumstances knowing that I am fulfilling God’s plan and that those around me are saved?
